Blog #10 - Veteran Gaming

Image
In today's world, gaming is often seen as a pastime for younger generations. However, this weekend I had the unique opportunity to experience firsthand how video games can sometimes transcend age boundaries that can provide cognitive, social, and emotional benefits, even for those in their later years. As I had the honor to "fight" beside a 78-year-old military veteran in Helldivers 2. We connected through an active Discord community that became a proud reminder of how gaming can serve as a tool for a fun engaging mental stimulation and connection to older generations. I met the veteran, whom I refer to as Willy (gamertag "willyeverwin"), in a Discord server dedicated to Helldivers 2, a war game and shooter where players must work together to achieve objectives while overcoming various hostile forces. At first, I didn’t know Willy's age, but he sounded pretty aged when he spoke and divulged stories about some of his military service felt like the game. Whe...

Blog #9 - American Sized

TGIF everyone, Earlier this morning while looking through twitter I saw this comic cut and it gave me a sad chuckle to how true talk it was about the US's food industry as a whole aims to stuff its consumers stomachs until they vomit or spend an hour in the restroom. The oversized portions we’ve come to expect at fast food chains in the U.S. — giant burgers, supersized fries, and sodas that could fill a small a regualar bowl is wild to accept as appropriate. While these meals seem convenient and very much pleasureable, they come with health risks when self control is non-exsistent. In the U.S., the “more is better” mentality has shaped our fast food culture, leading to "grander" portions and higher calorie intake or overload compared to neighboring countries. When I traveled abroad, I noticed that fast food meals in places like the Philippines and Japan are smaller and focus more on freshly cooked, balanced ingredients. For example, in Japan, a quick meal might include ...

Blog #8 - Gundam Construction

Image
Happy Saturday ladies and gents, today I spent my weekend diving into a new hobby I've been wanting to do. I have to admit—it was a lot more time-consuming but rewarding than I expected. If you're familiar with Gundam models, you probably know they're not just your typical plastic kits. These box of nightmares that test patiences are miniature robots that are extremely detailed, intricate, and take a surprising life span of your amount of time to assemble. I decided to give it a try and see how long it actually takes to build one of these iconic beauties.  I started with the famous  Gundam RX-78-2 model , a classic design, but I quickly realized that this was no quick weekend project. The kit came with hundreds of tiny plastic pieces, each of them numbered and requiring careful attention. Having to buy a specific tool kit for the model and the ones in the future was an expence I wasn't expecting. The first step was to carefully trim each piece from the sprues (the frame...

Entry #7 - Organic?

Hey guys, I recently was shown an interesting but relatively sad eventuality of how the food of the twenty first century is produced nearly up to today, but with slight modifications as of lately due to public concern. Fresh a 2012 documentary that implores viewers like foodies to reconsider where their food comes from and how it's produced. Before this movie, I watched a similar one called “Food inc.” It was more heartless and bleak than Fresh as it solely focused on the industrial farming that the public as a whole condones but is abhorred to witness its procedure; even I found it miserable to know but I see why that “necessary evil” exists to begin with. The opening of Fresh starts off a conversation that the public doesn’t often think about: the impact of our food choices on our health, the environment, and animal welfare-the last two being the most important. The film stacks up like tossing a log into the fire every time to make it worse and more unhealthy, really burning in t...

Entry #6 - Spaced Out

Building mechanical keyboards is a passion that most tech enthusiasts adore, but I gotta say guys, of all my hobbies, this one can be the most tedious. It's a peculiar love-hate relationship. The joy that comes from the customization is one of the most enticing aspects. Enthusiasts can choose from countless switches, keycaps, and layouts, constructing a keyboard that truly reflects their personality from start to finish. However, like most of the hobbies I have, it takes money to get the desired look I want. The satisfaction derived from assembling a unique piece of equipment that feels tailor-made is unmatched but then subconsciously thinking about how a full keycap set costs me a family meal hurts my soul a bit. However, this same freedom can also lead to decision fatigue. With so many various options of material and designs available, choosing the right components can become overwhelming, turning what looks like a straightforward project into a meticulous task. The assembly pr...

Entry #5 - "..Mayhem, like Me.."

I use to love these commercials as a kid, they were one of the most imaginative terribly worst scenarios I could have never thought of. I had to believe anyone making these commercials had a good time. The scrappy looking Dean Winters who has graced his appearance in a couple films and series such as “John Wick” (1) and a funny show “Battle Creek,” embodies the unpredictable chaotic force of Mayhem. The infamous Allstate Mayhem campaign consistently uses sadistic humor and overly exaggerated scenarios to illustrate the unpredictable nature of life itself, and the "Mayhem Bear" commercial is one of the various calamities depicted. In this thrashing memorable ad, a bear wreaks havoc to a family suv, showcasing the necessity of one of the various insurances that the firm covers within a lighthearted yet destructive way. At its core, the advertisement aims to promote Allstate’s insurance products, but it does so by captivating viewers while highlighting the true chaos that can ...

Entry #4 - Cars Are Pain

Image
Let me show you how being a car enthusiast can sometimes be a frustrating experience. At the beginning of the weekend, I decided to install some simple modifications on my car that had been sitting in my garage for months. I thought it would be efficient to tackle both in one sitting, but I was mistaken. What I expected to be a day’s worth of work turned into a grueling three-day marathon. From Friday evening to a late Sunday night, I found myself sweating, yelling, and pleading—exhausted. . and starving—while watching countless videos of others installing the same parts. You might wonder why I endured such turmoil for just two components. The answer is simple: this was my first solo project on a car I’ve only owned for a year, and I didn’t have the experienced help I used in the past. Compounding the challenge was my limited set of basic tools, which were only adequate for routine maintenance. new tools! The parts I was installing were an air intake system and a custom steering wheel....

Entry #3 - UNCLE!

This delight of nostalgia and pleasure that hearkens back to old heritage and simple cherished memories is protected by this fortified smooth metallic chest etched in this beautiful composition on the lid that compliments its personality and shows the art deco playfulness or timeless French “la fleur” elegance. Fidgeting with this petite trunk like a toy, I run my fingers through the groves of the lettering and the design while I wait for someone to kill the time. The harmony of this modest regal styling is pleasing to the eye while showcasing a dainty plant that reinforces my reassurance it will be a gratifying experience.  Opening the little chest, it pops open from these simple indentations of two tiny little speed bumps that holds it together so firmly. As I glided my fingers through the internals of this chest I can again feel the same design that was felt on the outside, but this time it is coated in fine white flakes that blankets th...

Entry #2 - Planned Mania

This game is an engaging, thought-provoking, chaotic tactical war simulator. "Helldivers 2” emerges as a thrilling embodiment of chaotic precision, or at least it can be with the right team. Featuring four-squad cooperative gameplay, it offers a uniquely engaging experience in the satirical realm of “Super Earth,” which is embroiled in a nearly never-ending galactic war against various entities, fighting on hundreds of planets. This sequel amplifies the raw frenetic intensity and strategic depth of its predecessor, inviting players into a tumultuous yet exhilarating universe where every mission demands both quick reflexes and tactical ingenuity to complete the most hectic operations the player community encounters. Below is a picture of the war map where divers (the player community) are tasked with maintaining or even expanding the human borders for "galactic peace" and security. Currently, there are two factions we are fighting, and the objective is to suppress or tota...

Entry #1 - Hardware Guts

Welcome welcome, I am Paulino Datingaling, I go to Glendale Community College currently in the morning for half of my weeks in the fall semester and on my spare time or more so on the weekend, pc building is one of the some what expensive hobbies I do to amuse myself. The desk seen above is a layout of components of what you would necessarily need in a personal "rig" (desktop). Doing this particular hobby of mine coincides with anyone's digital experience on the pc. Whether it be used for productivity or entertainment wise, building your own pc and not buying a pre-built one can enhance ones overall experience while using a desktop. A good majority in the pc community, including me, not only get hooked on the satisfying experience of using a personalized system but also the building aspect of it. PC building is the laboring practice and sometimes addiction of assembling a computer from individual hardware components that you would purchase yourself rather than purchasin...
