Blog #9 - American Sized
TGIF everyone, Earlier this morning while looking through twitter I saw this comic cut and it gave me a sad chuckle to how true talk it was about the US's food industry as a whole aims to stuff its consumers stomachs until they vomit or spend an hour in the restroom. The oversized portions we’ve come to expect at fast food chains in the U.S. — giant burgers, supersized fries, and sodas that could fill a small a regualar bowl is wild to accept as appropriate. While these meals seem convenient and very much pleasureable, they come with health risks when self control is non-exsistent. In the U.S., the “more is better” mentality has shaped our fast food culture, leading to "grander" portions and higher calorie intake or overload compared to neighboring countries.
When I traveled abroad, I noticed that fast food meals in places like the Philippines and Japan are smaller and focus more on freshly cooked, balanced ingredients. For example, in Japan, a quick meal might include grilled fish and rice, with some condiments, not a mound of fried food. This healthier approach has inspired me to make better food choices here at home and ensure to be conscious the next time I have a craving.
One place I’ve found that does it right is this savory spot dubbed, California Fish Grill. They serve a considerable array of healthy seafood meals with sides like quinoa, vegetables, and brown rice. The portions are satisfying, but not overwhelming, and the meals are refreshing and nourishing. I love that I can enjoy a delicious, healthy meal without feeling an underlying feeling of disgust.
Making healthier food choices isn’t about giving up flavor; it’s about finding balance. I’ve started paying attention to portion sizes and opting for meals that nourish my body. It’s possible to enjoy food that supports my health goals without sacrificing taste.
Changing eating habits takes time, but small changes can make a big difference. If you’re looking for healthier options, it’s possible to enjoy meals that are both satisfying and good for your body. Let’s try to embrace balance and enjoy food in a way that supports our well-being. Eat well and feel good!
